At the start of today’s f8 keynote, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg said that today’s announcements are going to be the “most transformative thing we’ve ever done for the web.” And I fully agree with him. Thanks to Facebook’s new technologies, social media will soon no longer be part of the Internet… it will simply become the Internet. [...]

It’s not just another Wordpress blog. Ignite the Spirit, the newly launched blog and website for the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre Project, brings awareness and progress updates on the build of this highly anticipated facility. The centre is expected to house a 3,200-seat event venue, an NHL-sized ice pad, three-lane walking and jogging track, pool, fitness and wellness centre, rock climbing and more. The aim of the new blog is to communicate with the Truro community, whether it be an upcoming event, recognition of the projects’ partners or conveying ways people can get involved. The facility isn’t due to open until Fall 2012, but instead of leaving everyone in the dark on its development, we have opened the door to ongoing discussions through the blog and the use of social media. Newspapers aren’t going to disappear any time soon, but the traditional website is. The traditional website – essentially a digitized version of your offline brochure, catalog or similar printed piece – is quickly becoming outdated and ineffective. Despite an honest attempt to get a solid eight hours of sleep every night, I find myself overwhelmingly bombarded by the need to keep the world updated with my life. Well, OK … maybe not the world, but anyone who is interested. I’ve recently made a pact with myself not to join any social media applications unless I plan to fully commit to keeping them updated. In fact, I’ve already caught myself signing up for applications only to delete them shortly after. I realize its best not to put all your eggs in one basket — but which ones are the right ones to choose? [...]
It’s amazing how much can be said in just 140 characters. Tweeters are spreading news and rumors across the globe in seconds with fewer syllables than it takes to form a sentence.
Founded in 2006, Twitter is a instant-messaging, blogging tool that asks members, “What are you doing?” Similar to adding Facebook friends to see status updates, Twitter allows users to “follow” others to get brief, yet frequent, updates. [...]

When it comes to social media, know your audiences.
Gen Y – the group also referred to as Millennials – is commonly classified as those born in the 1980s and ’90s, who are direct results of a technologically advanced upbringing. Raised in a wireless reality, with cellphones and iPods in hand, Gen Ys are web savvy beyond their years. [...]

Everyone and their dog has a blog these days. While the dogs usually don’t have much of anything to say, most humans seem to think that their myriad musings will be of interest to millions of other people. Welcome to web 2.0 [...]
