Do what you love

My creative partner, Crystal Oicle, and I did a little reminiscing recently. What was high school like for us? Back then, did we plan to become a copywriter and a graphic designer? Sort of. She liked art, I liked words, but we didn’t always know how we would make a career out of these passions.

200906120000000305_smu-businessThis is the mindset that initiated our latest Saint Mary’s University campaign. When you’re 15 or 16 years old, sometimes it’s hard to know what you want to do with your life. What you do know at that age is how you like to spend your time. Maybe skateboarding, biking or working out at the gym. You might be a movie buff or a music connoisseur.

With that in mind, we wanted to speak to these kids on their level, on their own turf. So we picked places where they do some of their favourite activities and used ambient stickers to provide them with a unique insight about their hobby of choice. We want them to know that if they have a passion, they can study at SMU to have a career that they’ll love.

Once our stickers came to fruition, we spent half a day running all over town positioning our pieces. We started at the Halifax Common skatepark. There was a surprising number of teens hanging around for a Wednesday morning. As soon as they saw the camera flash, they flocked to see what we were up to. Many of them were eager to show off their skills for our photo shoot.
