Together in the dark: social media sparks a blackout
EARTH HOUR: SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 8:30 p.m.
As the lights go out around the world this Saturday for Earth Hour, let the light from your mobile lead the way.
Earth Hour is an initiative proposed by the World Wildlife Fund to compel both individuals and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour in order to take a stand against climate change. First started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, the campaign is now a globally recognized movement.
But, don’t worry about sitting alone in the dark – Earth Hour has gone mobile with an online community waiting to share stories and insights with the lights out. With the help of popular social media tools, the WWF’s tech team will be up bright and early on Saturday morning to post Earth Hour news from around the world. As 8:30 p.m. approaches in Canada, pick up your cellphone and join the party. Followers are encouraged to post photos and comments to the organization’s Facebook page and check out their Flickr stream for inspiring images. For Twitter followers, @WWFCanada can be used for mentions and #EarthHour is the hashtag to use to participate in the conversation.
According to WWF-Earth Hour report, the message of Earth Hour this year is to go beyond the hour, and commit to a more sustainable way of living, everyday and not just for an hour. Trampoline is currently working on numerous green initiatives to freshen up the office such as a comprehensive recycling program, kitchen compost collective, and a paper waste reduction plan.
