Who saw this coming? For the past 10 years, communication experts have heralded a new dawn where the “consumer is King” and companies would lose control of their products and brands to their customers. But like most trends, it took longer to take hold and the reality is not exactly as predicted. [...]

Attended the Marketing Awards and I now get the difference between us and them. When I say ‘us’ and ‘them’, I mean Halifax and Toronto. Here (I’m sitting in a Starbucks off Queen St. W, TO), they are frightened and paranoid. This manifests itself as cranky and critical. [...]

As promised on Monday, here is quick re-cap of Peter Korecki’s presentation at our I’ll Buy That event last Thursday. Earlier in the week, I talked about “recession” being a state of mind. Although her presentation touched on a number of issues that were of great interest to the retailers in the audience, it was the current credit card and banking issues that generated the greatest discussion. Christine said she is available to any of you for more information on these or any other issues atlantic@retailcouncil.org. [...]

With everything melting down in the financial markets, I couldn’t help but think about a dinner I attended last spring with the keynote address by the CEO of the New York Bank of Mellon, Bob Kelly. [...]

I know it has been almost 2 years since we pooped the bed over the Commonwealth Games, but I’m just now getting over the pain and almost over my embarrassment. Still not sure if enough time has passed for us to show our face again in public but more on that a little later. [...]
