To buy or to make…

Christmas 2009… the usual abundance of gifts, toys and tons of stuff that probably wouldn’t have fallen into the ‘need’ category of my family’s lives. I took a moment to reflect and realize as I looked around our home that we are a very lucky family. I decided that next year would be different.

Do my kids really need any more toys? Can we afford all the things that we buy? Do others necessarily like what we buy? I came to the conclusion that it would be nice to put a personal touch on our gifts this year by making and creating more than buying and charging. Now, don’t get me wrong – there are plenty of wonderful things out there that would be easy to just pick up and call it a day, but anyone who knows me knows that I like a challenge. It doesn’t matter if I have to stay up late completing my tasks and may be occasionally cranky from sleep deprivation – it’s all about the spirit of Christmas. [...]
