Best of 2009: Clothes
It’s no secret that I love to shop. I’m a borderline shopaholic when it comes to clothes and shoes. When I’m approaching such a store I get giddy, anxious and uncontrollably driven, especially when I’m carrying an obliging piece of plastic.
When I began working at Trampoline in September, I knew I had to familiarize myself with the Brewery Market and nearby surroundings. I was not expecting to discover one of the best kept shopping secrets in Halifax. Suit Yourself, a clothing boutique, is quickly becoming my new obsession. Selling predominantly women’s designer clothes, they provide flirty, sophisticated and feminine styles that range from high to low on the economic scale. The most enticing feature in the store is the two round sale racks that situate near the entrance. One holds a half-price sign, and the other 70% off. Now, I’m not one to hunt down bargain-priced clothes, but these sale items are in a league of their own. Brand name blazers, dresses, skirts and blouses hang here in a range of sizes, reduced so much you almost feel like you’re buying second-hand. Everything is new, and the pieces are so classic and fitting, they’ll mesh with any emerging fashion trend. Items sold off the rack are replaced weekly, motivating customers to come back and check what new items have been reduced. Beautiful items lay beyond the sale racks as well, including suits for men and women near the back, and a conjoined room full of pretty cocktail dresses.
The staff convey a relaxed and intimate approach with their clientele, making it seem like they genuinely want to make this an enjoyable experience for you, rather then just selling off merchandise. They even offer a glass of wine to loyal shoppers on Fridays, which makes for a perfect end to the workweek. All purchases are placed in eco-friendly reusable bags, which are great to use at the farmer’s market or grocery store. So next time you’re visiting the Brewery Market, don’t forget to pop in to Suit Yourself for a little retail therapy. Or not — then there’s more for me.
I haven’t been down to Suit Yourself in a while… and this might be just the right incentive. Wine on Fridays? Perfect end to the workweek is right. Sorry, Jessica—you’ve got a new shopper in town/office to compete with.
